Look at these wonderful people! Initiated by our staff, (through one individual I’d like to point out – Karen Kawakami, she’s hiding in the corner!) – Everyone has been encouraged to bring in food to donate to the community food drive! I can’t thank all staff enough for stepping up to help those in need in our community.

Our Deputy CAO Derrick Thomson sent out the following email to staff and it sums up well what’s going on:
For those of you who have already contributed, thank you! If you haven’t had a chance yet, there’s still time! Donations are being collected until Friday, June 12th. I hope you’re able to support the community’s goal of raising 20,000 pounds of food for our local food bank and pantries. There’s too many people in our community who are food insecure. Household food insecurity is associated with:
- Chronic diseases
- Including heart disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, anemia, dental decay and bowel disorders
- Insufficient consumption of fruit and vegetables can increase the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease
Nutritionally inadequate diets:
- Poor nutrition in children can affect the development of their intellectual, social, and emotional skills
School success:
- Children in food insecure households are more likely to have growth and development problems, are more likely to be absent from school, and have difficulty concentrating and learning.
Needed food items include:
- Peanut butter
- Pasta & pasta sauce
- Canned fish & meats
- Peanut-free school snacks & 100% juice boxes
- Canned vegetables & fruit
- Canned soups & stews
Monetary donations and gift cards are also welcome. They are used by the food banks to purchase fresh food such as milk, eggs, vegetables and fruit. Financial donations can also be made online at: https://www.canadahelps.org/dn/7869
