Every Great Dream Begins with a Dreamer – Black History Month February 2016

Bring joy to your February. Celebrate the contributions of black Canadians who have helped to make Canada what it is today. Feel the warmth of Heritage Hall (HH) with friends by joining in festivities this Black History Month.
Throughout February events will be hosted by the Guelph Black Heritage Society:

Kick off with the Band ‘Built‐for‐Bob’ ‐ a Marley tribute ‐ February 6, 2016.
Hosted by CFRU’s Nicky Dread the evening will start with a traditional welcome and territorial acknowledgement by Jan Sherman and feature cultural foods, DJ, as well as performances by spoken word artist Truth Is and the band Built for Bob. All ages, licensed event. Doors open at 7:00 pm, admission $8 – Heritage Hall, 83 Essex Street

Slam with Guelph Spoken Word – February 11, 2016
Presented by Guelph Spoken Word ‐ Heritage Hall, 83 Essex Street

Enjoy Live Jazz Music and a Screening of the National Film Board’s “In the Key of Oscar” – February 13, 2016
Guelph Youth Jazz Ensemble directed by Brent Rowan will perform prior to the screening of the film about jazz pianist Oscar Peterson. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Free admission, donations welcome – Heritage Hall, 83 Essex Street

Live the Dream at the 3rd Annual ‘Music, Love and Family’ ‐ February 20, 2016
Come and dance the night away! Featuring a performance by Oshungo Drum and Dance and DJ Charles Jansen. Enjoy cultural foods, also silent auction and raffle. All ages, licensed event. Doors open at 7:00 pm, admission $10 ‐ Heritage Hall, 83 Essex Street

Connect at the Guelph Civic Museum Music Night ‐ February 26, 2016
Enjoy an evening of live music featuring vocalists Tracy Cain and Lorraine Harris. Event starts at 7:00 pm. Free admission, donations welcome – Guelph Civic Museum, 52 Norfolk Street

Feel the drums at a family‐friendly workshop ‐ February 27, 2016End Black History Month with a Bang! Featuring Wiijii Numgumook Kwe Singers and Jamie Andrews & Funga Drummers. Doors open at 1:30 pm, admission $7 or $20/family of four – Heritage Hall, 83 Essex Street

Since 2011 Guelph Black Heritage Society has striven to create a cultural, historical and social community centre within Guelph and Wellington County at Heritage Hall, formerly known as the British Methodist Episcopal Church, a significant destination on the 19th‐century ‘Underground Railroad’ slave escape route.
