What a Week #Guelph! #TurbanUp @Z_Teca @GroscheInc @DanielMooreFCS @TheBlueBlast @TheRhyzeProject @GWSA

A very busy but fun-filled week (as usual) here in Guelph!

Let’s start with celebrating International Woman’s Day with my beautiful daughter Adelaide (pictured above). It was a great night celebrating woman in our great city! Lots of entrepreneurs and startup businesses on display with an inspirational message from Ginger Grant! One of the slides from her talk I took a picture of here which I really liked:

Thanks to Innovation Guelph and all the volunteers who made this event happen! A special shout out to Kristel Manes who’s leadership on this event and throughout Guelph is always on display!

How about the basketball OFSAA winners from Bishop Mac high school ! They came home from Timmins so the parents and I greeted them with cheers when the bus rolled in! Way to go guys! Guelph is proud of you!

Then we’re off to the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association “Retire in Style” trade show at our Evergreen Centre!

It was my first time attending and I was really impressed! Lots of good information available! One of the booths had an Innovation Guelph client (Angela Liu) who has developed a really unique product to wear that connects people with outside help but does much much more. She started Smart Home Health. Check it out: http://www.ezhealthcoach.com

Lots of different booths setup! Nice to see Age Friendly Guelph there too! Helping us achieve our city Older Adult Strategy!

Ran into my friend Sarah! (She’ll kill me for putting her picture here ha!)

And as usual, our amazing EMS crew helping others with life saving tips and service!

Now let’s go celebrate Sikhism with students from the University of Guelph! It was a good showing with lots of sudents coming by to learn more about being a Sikh and having the opportunity to Turban Up! They wouldn’t let me say no, but I’ve always wanted to try one on anyways so I was honoured to have two students put a traditionally wrapped turban on me!

Their campus group has many members and was very welcoming to everyone that stopped by their booths to help break down barriers, misunderstandings and give answers on their beliefs.

Thank you for your contributions to the University and to our city!

Here’s the guys who helped me with my turban! They explained that originally only royality was able to wear them. Yet it was opened up for all to wear them as a sign of humility and equality.

Okay, thanks for reading this far! Let’s go open some new businesses in our wonderful downtown shall we!

Let’s start with Grosche Tea & Coffee Shop!

A wonderful team working here folks! They are joining other Guelph businesses (like Flow Office Wisdom) as a business paying a living wage along with being a B-Corp! They’re located right on Wyndham Street north. I tried out their tea (they have lots to choose from) and it was great!

Marty Williams from the Downtown Business Association stopped by to welcome them too!

Thanks for picking Guelph as your first retail shop! They picked Guelph for lots of reasons and I know our community will love them for it!

Let’s thank Daniel Moore now! He retired from being the director of Guelph & Wellington Children and Family Services. There were so many people there to thank him for his leadership and devotion to children and families! A great job he did for our city!

Anyone up for a burrito? Or wearing a sombrero? Well follow me to the other side of our downtown to Z-teca Gourmet Burritos! Fresh made and Mexican inspired goodness!

Their grand opening was fantastic! More jobs and more choice for our community which helps our economy! There was a long lineup of people trying out their burritos in support of the United Way today! Thank you for giving back to those in need! Some happy customers!

They’re located at the corner of Wellington and Gordon! Right beside the Running Works store!

I’d like to thank the students of Conestoga College today from the Integrated Marketing & Communications program! They, along with Zehrs and other sponsors stepped up today at the Imperial and Paisley Zehrs with a BBQ to raise funds for the Special Olympics!

Some of the floor hockey players, who just returned from Newfoundland, showed off their gold medals! A “three-peat” of gold medals for our Guelph team!

Let’s end this looooong blog post with more great Guelph news! More stats released yesterday continue to show Guelph having a great economy with the lowest unemployment in Canada at 3.9%! We had great coverage on CTV here: (copy and paste) http://kitchener.ctvnews.ca/mobile/video?binId=1.1147261

Also a great article from Global News here: http://globalnews.ca/news/2573565/the-little-city-that-could-how-guelph-got-the-lowest-unemployment-rate-in-canada/

Thanks for reading through this all! Don’t forget to share and retweet and comment if you wish!

Take care,

Cam

it so nice to see you cam doing so much in the community. It shows that you are a very caring person. i know being a mayor you are very busy but you always take time out of your busy schedule to attend the special events around town.
